The Monteiro Interview Guidelines for Diagnosing the Autism Spectrum

The Monteiro Interview Guidelines for Diagnosing the Autism Spectrum, Second Edition (MIGDAS-2) is an evidence-based, structured interview process used to gather and organize qualitative information needed to diagnose autism in children, adolescents, and adults. The MIGDAS-2 version for adults with verbal fluency is included in our assessment process due to its neurodiversity-affirming, non-pathologizing approach. We find it extremely helpful in identifying lesser-known characteristics as well as autistic traits found in minority populations that are often missed by other evaluation tools due to masking, above-average intelligence, or those underrepresented traits.

The 90-120 minute interview is conducted by telehealth and used to gather information related to the three developmental areas affected by autism:

  1. Language and Communication

  2. Social Relationships and Emotional Responses

  3. Sensory Use and Interests

The MIGDAS-2’s unique end result is a profile that describes each individual's unique way of relating to the world.
